Spatial Interaction • Service Interface
Australia’s most recognised coffee bar franchise, Gloria Jean’s (GJC) was in need of a complete brand redesign. As part of our brand solution system, Conner & Sakamura stepped in to address the spatial redesign as an extension of the brand narrative, ensuring the new stores took on more relevance in a changing retail landscape and echoed the opportunity to signal the brand’s sea change.
This project encompassed a full-scale rebrand and brand reposition in the global market, including assessing a variety of store formats such as high street cafes, kiosk and drive-through application, service design and universal aesthetic foundation of spacial usage and materials, upon which a multi-faceted approach across diverse global markets could be implemented. The resultant architectural solution ensures brand continuity and consistency.
Tokyo Crows, Tokyo
Cognitive Business Case • Financial Engineering
Global Brand Positioning • Retail Development
Another example of strategic business acumen and the development of brand structure, Tokyo Crows is a Conner & Sakamura conceived and instituted project. Born in Tokyo, all Japanese. A small-space shrine to the essentials of Japanese after-work life – beer, sake, whisky, yakitori + kushiyaki, work colleagues and friends. Tokyo Crows (‘Crows’) promises to transform a stressful day of work or just life in general to a position that truly matters: Comfort.
The choices are simple, the quality undeniable, Crows is Tokyo life, just upgraded. Start by sharing little skewers of goodness, washed down by craft Japanese beer, “only sold in Japan” sake and whisky, or new takes on Japanese cocktails, it’s your choice whether it’s an hour or the whole night.

Integrating material design with furniture, fixtures, art, lighting, and plant life we developed the environmental and experiential standards to transform the typical co-working model into a living, breathing, space for innovation.

Envisioned as membership driven, upscale cocktail den, we worked with the owners to develop their vision from initial idea complete through to finished space. Taking inspiration from the space’s original use as the main floor of an 1870’s four floor town house we custom designed and built the entire space to look and feel as it may have when it was first built and new. All while making it function for the service and atmosphere envisioned and then turning it slightly on it’s ear.
Completely gutted and rebuilt from scratch the process included up to 7 carpenters onsite at any given time handcrafting every piece of wood, molding, beam and brace, and component in the space. It was built as if it were being built in the era of the apartment. Gas lamps fitted for lighting, sliding doors hidden in walls, coffered panelling and ceilings, custom designed and built onsite.
